Literature Text

Without letting a second more pass, you jumped from the railing you were on and backflipped to the tallest and darkest point you can find without being detected landing on a thick metal beam at the perimeter of the room. Loki quickly resumed pacing back and forth while looking at the ground as he was before. The door slid open as Natasha quietly walked up to the glass cage. Letting a few seconds slide, Loki stopped in mid pace and smiles.

“Hm, there’s not many people who can sneek up on me,” he casually says as he turns to face the Black Widow.

‘Really? You’re gonna twist my words and use it on her. You’re funny, Loki.’ You tried not to snicker from your spot.

“But you figured I’d come.” Natasha’s voice came out sharp.

“After...after what torture Fury can concoct, you would appear as a friend...as a balm...and I would cooperate.”

‘You can be too smart sometimes....’ You smirked in the darkness.

“I want to know what you’ve done to Agent Barton.”

“I’d say I expanded his mind.” His silvertongue being as smooth as usual.

“Once you’ve won,...” She slowly walks closer to the cage “...once you’re king of the mountain, what happens to his mind?” She crossed her arms keeping her blankest face. The god merely smirked.

“Is this love, Agent Romanoff?”

“Love is for children. I owe him a debt.”

‘He’s not gonna fall for the interrogation, Natasha.’ You sat cross legged in the dark area with your elbow resting on your knee, and your chin rest on the hand while watching the scene play out in front of you.

“Tell me.” Loki motioned her to go on as he stepped back and sat on a bench at the end of the cell. Natasha let out a deep sigh before continuing.

“Before I worked for S.H.I.E.L.D., I, uh...” She sat on the chair right next to her, “Well, I made a name for myself. I have a very specific skill set.” The god’s eyes continued to stare down the assassin with piercing daggers. “I didn’t care who I used it for...or on. I got on S.H.I.E.L.D.’s radar in a bad way. Agent Barton was sent to kill me. He made a different call.”

“And what would you do if I vow to spare him?”

‘What kind of question is that, Loki?’ You gave him an unamused look through the roof of his cage, and somehow you were pretty sure he knew.

“Not let you out,” Natasha responded blankly.

“Ah no, but I like this. Your world in the balance, and you bargain for one man?” Loki abruptly said with a big grin.

“Regimes fall every day. I tend not to weep over that, I'm Russian...or was.”

“And what are you now?”

“It's really not that complicated.” She stood up from her seat and returned to her cross armed position. “I've got red in my ledger, I'd like to wipe it out.”

“Can you? Can you wipe out that much red? Drakov's daughter, Sao Paulo, the hospital fire?” Natasha’s eyes widened with each word. His voice became more and more serious as he slowly stood up and walks over to the Russian. “Barton told me everything. Your ledger is dripping, it's GUSHING red, and you think saving a man no more virtuous than yourself will change anything? This is the basest sentimentality. This is a child at prayer... PATHETIC!” Your own eyes started to widen as well.

‘L-L-Loki...? What are you...?’

“You lie and kill in the service of liars and killers. You pretend to be separate, to have your own code, something that makes up for the horrors. But they are a part of you, and they will never go away!”

‘No. Stop. Please. Loki.’ You tried to cover your ears and push back the tears that were slowly making their way out. A pound from the god’s fist against the glass made you and Natasha jump from your respective spots. His voice dripped down like dark poison.

“I won't touch Barton. Not until I make him kill you! Slowly...intimately...in every way he knows you fear! And then he'll wake just long enough to see his good work, and when he screams, I'll split his skull! This is my bargain, you mewling quim!” You gazed at the edge of the cell where they’re both in your line of sight in horror. Romanoff turned away from the god, whimpering.

“You're a monster!” she choked out. He chuckled.

“Oh no, you brought the monster.”

Suddenly, she stood up straight and turned around to face Loki with her usual poker face, “So, Banner...that's your play.”

“What?” Loki questioned in confusion. The assassin quickly fast walks towards the door as she communicated through the intercom of her earpiece.

“Loki means to unleash the Hulk. Keep Banner in the lab, I'm on my way. Send Thor as well.” She stopped right before the door to turn to Loki one last time.

“Thank you for your cooperation.” And she walked out with the door closing behind her.

Loki looked up from the edge of his cage to see you staring down with him terror. His face became even more confused than a second ago.

“My love...?” His voice filled with concern. You shook your head violently to let out any thoughts in your head and jumped off from your hiding place landing perfectly on the spot Natasha was previously. You stood up straight giving him a very unamused look. By now, Loki realized what was going through your head. “I can explain....”

“What?” interrupting him. “That everything you told me at the cliff was a lie? That my code, my rules, are pathetic as well?” You could tell his heart was slowly ripping apart, but it wasn’t close to how your’s was. “I told you my hands were stained with blood I can’t wash out. Her’s is too. We both have bloodshedd pasts we try to reconcile for. So, is whatever you told her goes same for me as well?!” The rage and anger in your eyes returned but a mixture of betrayal and hurt was shown as well.

“Those eyes...I know those eyes,” he whispered under his breath quietly staring at you with his own widened eyes. Your patience started slowly growing thin.

“TELL ME!”

“No! You are nothing like her! You are much more than that sad excuse of a human!”

“Then what? Huh?!”

“She tries to save one man to help her reconcile for her wrongs of the past. Would you not say that’s childish?” You kept silent. “A person with half a brain can see that you’re much more smarter than that. You use yourself to repent what you’ve done not someone who’s going to do it for you. And furthermore, she is no different than the division she works for like the mindless quim that she is.” Both you and Loki stared at each other, your’s with anger and his with sorrow, as you try to real back your thoughts to figure out what to do next before letting out a deep sigh.

“And what about me then? I work here as well. Does that make me a ‘mindless quim’ as well?” You spat out with a raised brow.

“Never! Such beauty is not capable of being a quim.”

“Would you like to ‘expand’ my mind as well then?”

“What reason is there for you to twist my words like this, my love?” His eyes started to fill with tears until he wiped them away trying to look strong. You let out a heavy sigh trying to push back your own tears and rubbed your temples.

“I had enough of this. My head is throbbing. I’m done for now....” You turned and slowly made your way towards the door.

“But...”

“I need some air....” You walked through the sliding doors and let them close behind you. The gush of air escaping between the crack of the opening let out a faint dropping sound of Loki’s knees and soft sobbing. You covered your face with your hand trying to not choke out your own sob and walked towards the lab.
